This song is now overplayed, but powerhouse Florence is good.
Dog Days Are Over - Florence + The Machine
With nothing to lose and all to gain, the dog days are over. No more days of despair. No more moments of hopelessness. No more time in hiding. Go out and take a leap of faith! Run! Scream! Love! Take a plunge into euphoria! Take a stand in front of the face of fear. Take a risk because only happiness awaits on the other side. Be persistent in obtaining your desires. Be alert! Be free! Be happy! Be everything you desire. Stop longing, yearning, wanting, hoping! And start creating! Make your life a dream come true, because your hopes are just the first draft, life is the true canvas waiting to be covered with the brushstrokes of your dreams.
“Happiness hit her like a train on a track.”

They are named after a South American pickpocket training academy! The beats and harmonies are tinted with just the right amount of addicting, interesting tension. Love me some dream pop.
School Of Seven Bells / Iamundernodisguise
A bare soundscape of aching hearts + a perfect intro to drone (besides The Velvet Underground).

“Until Then (Broadcast Cover)” - Benoit Pioulard + Rafael Anton Irisarri
It shouldn’t be news to anyone with internet access that Broadcast’s Trish Keenan passed away from pnuemonia just six days ago. Since then, the constant outpour of love from fans, musicians, and bloggers has been stunning. Just about two hours ago The Sight Below’s Rafael Anton Irisarri and singer-songwriter Benoit Pioulard released an absolutely astounding cover of Broadcast’s “Until Then.”
I’ve been listening to the track on repeat for the past hour or so and still cannot adequately describe my feelings on the track. But one thing I’m certain of is, that in this final letter to Trish Keenan, Thomas Meluch and Rafael Anton Irisarri have created something truly devastating. DL via [soundcloud]

A seamless story of selective sounds. I like the woodwinds/percussiveness. “If you doubt that I’ll be there, don’t despair, don’t you dare.”

“All We Grow” - S. Carey
A little late on posting this, but a few days ago S. Carey released his first official music video for “In The Dirt”. S. Carey is the drummer of Bon Iver and released his first full length, All We Grow, last year. If I wouldn’t have rushed through making my best-of 2010 list, this release surely would’ve been on it (read my pseudo-review of the album here). I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him live multiple times (just the other night, actually), and his live performance does not disappoint. In early February he’ll be embarking on tour with Yann Tiersen, and that will be a show you surely do not want to miss.
To see if S. Carey is coming to your area, check here.

Well, like all things Muse, this is glorious without pretentiousness…satisfying in all of its instrumental layers.

The percussion and piano here is lightheartedly addicting.

THE RADIO DEPT. | Heaven’s On Fire
In 1995, The Radio Dept. was formed by Elin Almered and Johan Duncanson (who were old school friends). The name was taken from a gas station/radio repair shop in Lund, Sweden, which had a large sign with the name Radioavdelningen, (“The Radio Department” in Swedish) hanging outside their shop.
We miss this classic 90’s rock so much. This is just pure raw good music without crazy looping effects or ‘chill-wave’ material we’ve been hearing all year. Let’s bring this stuff back, ok?
P.S. Don’t smoke girls, we find that very unattractive. No offense if you do. :)

This L.A.-based one-man band is so talented, people like Zooey Deschanel collaborate. The carefree vibe is supercatchy, and I love the organ and electic guitar. Hey nonny na na na na, “bittersweet pop bliss”.

Krall and Winehouse’s versions got nothin’ on the Queen of Blues’ strong, sweet, and sultry voice.

My intro to big beat? I like the accessible yet eccentric quality in this song.

That simple guitar riff beginning gives way to harmonies that are both independent and part of a team, influenced by progressive and shoegaze.
Sunbeam RD. - Memory Loss
I was thrilled to present a show back in early December, which included a great opening set from locals Sunbeam RD. Before I slipped into my much needed holiday hiatus, the band gave me a heads up about a new EP called Circular Breathing - which was released today for free. Although it’s only two songs, they both pack a punch. Listen to this badass new tune ”Memory Loss” above and if you missed them in December, go see them at Cafe Du Nord on Jan 20th.
The popular single is stripped down to the protagonist alone, whose steady growth on the upper registry is just beautiful.
